MOV vs MP4: What Is the Difference and Which Should You Use?

By the FileTools team · Updated October 27, 2026 · 4 min read

You record a video on your iPhone, send it to a friend with a Windows PC, and it will not play. Or a website tells you it only accepts MP4. The cause is almost always the difference between MOV and MP4. This guide explains what they are and when to convert.

Containers and codecs

A video file has two layers. The container (MOV, MP4, MKV) is the box that holds the video, audio and metadata. The codec (H.264, HEVC/H.265, AV1) is how the picture is compressed. Two files with the same extension can behave differently if they use different codecs, which is why a MOV sometimes plays and sometimes does not.

What is MOV?

MOV is the QuickTime container created by Apple. iPhones, iPads and Macs record to MOV by default. It works perfectly in Apple software but is less universal elsewhere.

What is MP4?

MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is a standardized container built on the same ideas as QuickTime. It is supported by practically every phone, TV, browser, social network and editing program, which makes it the safest format for sharing.

Why iPhone videos may not play elsewhere

Recent iPhones can record with HEVC (H.265), which is efficient but not supported everywhere without extra software. To get more compatible files, open Settings > Camera > Formats and choose Most Compatible, which records H.264 video.

How to convert MOV to MP4

  1. Open the MOV to MP4 converter.
  2. Upload your .mov file.
  3. Click Convert to MP4 and wait for the progress bar. The first run downloads a small video engine that is cached afterwards.
  4. Download your MP4.

The conversion happens in your browser, so the video is not uploaded. The result is encoded as H.264 video with AAC audio, which plays on virtually everything.

When to keep MOV

If you edit in Final Cut or iMovie, or you shoot with professional codecs like ProRes, keep the original MOV. Convert a copy for sharing.

Shrinking the result

If the MP4 is still too large for email or chat, read how to compress a video for WhatsApp, Discord and email, or turn a short clip into a lightweight animation as described in how to make a GIF from a video.

H.264 versus H.265 (HEVC)

H.265 compresses video roughly twice as efficiently as H.264 at the same quality, which is why recent iPhones use it. The price is compatibility: older computers and some browsers cannot decode it without extra software or hardware support. If you want maximum compatibility, convert to H.264 MP4. If you only watch on recent Apple devices, keeping H.265 saves space.

Audio inside the file

Most phone and web videos use AAC audio, which works in both containers. Rarely, a file with an unusual audio codec plays with no sound in some players; converting to MP4 with AAC fixes it.

Troubleshooting

Quick reference

The extension on a video file tells you only the container. Renaming a .mov file to .mp4 does not convert it; the codecs inside stay the same, so a player that could not decode them before still cannot. A real conversion re-encodes the video into a format that the target device understands, which is why the converter is the reliable fix.

Setting your iPhone for fewer surprises

In Settings, Camera, Formats, choose Most Compatible if you frequently share videos with people on other platforms, and choose High Efficiency if storage is your priority and you mostly stay within the Apple ecosystem.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting MOV to MP4 lose quality?

It re-encodes the video, so there is a very small quality change at normal settings, usually not noticeable.

Which format is better for YouTube?

YouTube accepts both. MP4 with H.264 is a safe default.
