About FileTools

FileTools is a collection of free, browser-based tools for working with images, PDF documents, videos and QR codes: HEIC to JPG, image compression and resizing, PDF merge, split and compress, video compression, MOV to MP4, video to GIF, frame extraction and more. Every tool runs entirely on your own device, using your browser's processing power — nothing you select is uploaded to a server.

Who is behind FileTools

FileTools is an independent web project, built and maintained by its owner. It is not part of a large software company, and it is not a front for selling your data. The tools are written and tested by us, the guides are written by us, and every message sent to hello@filetools.you is read by a person.

Why we built it

Ordinary file tasks tend to end in the same frustrating way: you search for a converter, upload a private photo or contract to an unknown website, wait in a queue, and then discover a watermark, a size limit or a subscription prompt. We built FileTools to remove those obstacles. You open the page, drop in a file, and get the result. No account, no e-mail address, no file-size cap.

How local processing works

Modern browsers are powerful. Image work uses the Canvas API; PDF work uses open-source libraries such as pdf-lib and PDF.js; video work uses FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly; HEIC decoding uses libheif. The code that does the work is downloaded to your browser, and your files are read directly from your disk into that code. When you close the tab, the data is gone. You can confirm this yourself by watching the Network tab of your browser's developer tools while you use a tool.

Our editorial approach

The guides on this site explain the concepts behind each tool: what a format is, how compression works, what the trade-offs are, and how to avoid common mistakes. We write them to be useful on their own, whether or not you use our tools, we update them when something changes, and we say so plainly when a tool has limits — for example, that compressing a PDF makes its text non-selectable, or that very long videos need a lot of memory.

What we care about

How we are funded

FileTools is free to use and is supported by advertising and, in the future, by affiliate links to products we consider useful. Ads are served by Google AdSense; see our Privacy Policy for the details on cookies and analytics. Ads never receive the contents of your files, and advertising does not influence what the guides say.
