How to Compress a Video for WhatsApp, Discord and Email
Modern phones record sharp 4K video, and a single minute can take hundreds of megabytes. Chat apps and email were not built for that. Messaging apps recompress what you send, and many services cap file size. This guide explains how video size works and how to compress a video so it can be sent.
Why are videos so large?
File size depends on three things: resolution (4K has four times the pixels of Full HD), bitrate (how much data is stored per second) and duration. A phone records at a high bitrate to keep quality, so a short clip can easily exceed email and chat limits.
Typical limits (always check current rules)
- Email: often 20-25 MB per message (Gmail allows 25 MB attachments).
- WhatsApp: videos sent as videos are compressed automatically and limited to roughly 16 MB on many devices; files sent as documents can be much larger, up to 2 GB.
- Discord: free accounts have a small upload limit, and paid tiers allow more.
Service limits change, so check the app's current help page before you start.
How to compress a video in your browser
- Open the video compressor.
- Upload your MP4, MOV or WebM file.
- Choose a preset: Higher quality, Balanced or Smallest file.
- Press Compress video. The first time, your browser downloads a small video engine (about 25 MB) that is cached afterwards.
- Download the MP4 and compare the sizes.
Everything is processed on your own computer, so private clips are not uploaded to anyone's server.
Tips to reach a size limit
- Trim first. Cutting a clip from 60 to 20 seconds cuts its size by two-thirds.
- Lower the resolution. 720p looks fine on a phone screen and is far smaller than 4K.
- Use H.264 MP4. It is the most compatible and compresses well. For iPhone MOV files, see MOV vs MP4.
- Use a computer for long videos. Very long or very large files need a lot of memory; Chrome or Edge on a desktop works best.
Alternatives to compressing
- Share a link from a cloud drive instead of attaching the file.
- Send the clip as a looping animation instead; see how to make a GIF from a video.
- If you only need a picture from the video, extract a frame instead of sending the whole clip.
Quality versus size
Compression always trades quality for size. For chat, a small file at slightly lower quality is better than a video that fails to send. For anything you will edit or archive, keep the original untouched.
Bitrate explained with simple math
Video size is roughly bitrate x duration. Bitrate is measured in megabits per second (Mbps), and one byte is eight bits. A 60-second clip at 8 Mbps is 8 x 60 = 480 megabits, which is 60 megabytes. The same clip at 2 Mbps is 120 megabits, or 15 megabytes. That is why halving the duration, or reducing the bitrate by a factor of four, has such a dramatic effect. Phone cameras record 4K at 40 Mbps or more, so one minute can be over 300 MB.
Recommended settings by purpose
| Purpose | Resolution | Approximate bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| Chat or email (small file) | 720p | 1.5-2.5 Mbps |
| Social media upload | 1080p | 5-8 Mbps |
| Archive or editing | Original | Keep the source |
Troubleshooting
The compressed video will not play on my phone
Use MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, the most widely supported combination. If the original was HEVC, read MOV vs MP4.
The audio is out of sync or missing
Try the Balanced preset and avoid very long videos on weak devices. If the problem persists, trim the clip and compress the shorter part.
It is still too big
Trim the video, choose the Smallest file preset, or share a link instead. For a short visual moment, a lightweight animation can also be sent as described in how to make a GIF from a video.
Keep the original
Compression discards information permanently. Always keep the untouched file somewhere safe and send the compressed copy.
Quick reference
- Trim the clip first; it is the single biggest saving.
- Prefer 720p for messaging.
- Use MP4 with H.264 for the widest compatibility.
- Keep a copy of the original.
- Check the receiving app's current limit before you start.
These steps take only a few minutes and avoid the quality loss that comes from letting a messaging app recompress a very large file on its own.
Frequently asked questions
Why does WhatsApp make my video blurry?
It recompresses videos to save bandwidth. Compressing it yourself first, or sending it as a document, gives you more control.
Is a MOV file the same as MP4?
No, though they are related. Read the comparison in MOV vs MP4.
